Urban Weave: Tactical Sidewalk System

Indian streets are vibrant public spaces, yet over 70% lack pedestrian footpaths, resulting in unsafe conditions for the city's growing population. Few months back me & Maitry Patel participated in a design competition & envisioned a 3 phased tactical urbanism intervention to create inclusive, safe, livable streets centered around the pedestrian experience for a site in Ahemdabad.

The existing streetscape has minimal sidewalk space and barriers between vehicles and pedestrians, despite Indian streets' rich social and commercial activity. The proposal reclaims a safe street space for people in three phases & one extended phase.

Concept: The idea is to create a modular, flexible and scalable tactical intervention that can enhance the pedestrian experience while utilising minimal resources and still accommodating the Indian street activities.

The plan can be executed in three phases. All of these phases solve a problem by showcasing flexible and scalable intervention. Each phase will depict increasing levels of interventions and tackle issues surrounding them.
